Rwanda and the gorillas
An encounter with giants
Rwanda is known as “The heart of Africa” due to its central location on the African continent. It is also referred to as “The land of a thousand hills”, which makes it an ideal environment to trek and see the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat of the Virunga mountains. Trekking can take a couple of hours, depending on where the gorilla family are situated. We trekked for 2 hours up a mountain, with porters, who assist you through the tricky, sometimes slippery areas. But once you reach the gorilla family, you get to sit and spend an incredible hour watching the family interact. One of the highlights for me, was having one of the babies come so close, like he wanted to sit in my lap!
If you’re looking for 5 -Star luxury accommodation while on your trip, we highly recommend a stay at Bisate Lodge, An award-winning eco-chic rainforest lodge nestled in a mesmerizing volcanic landscape. This Wilderness Safaris lodge is nestled up on the side of a mountain, and sits perched like giant birds nests and with only 6 rooms, these forest villas are very exclusive. After spending the day in the company of the gorillas, return to your room and relax in a hot bath. The spectacular views from your patio are onto Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno volcanoes in the distance. The lodge boasts a wine cellar, library, spa, restaurant, and tree nursery, where you can plant your own tree.
Now let’s talk about the food- seasonal and fresh, mostly from their own garden, you will eat like a King in the sumptuous surroundings of the lodge. Bisate supports the local communities who grow crops, and they also get their eggs, organic and free range, from their neighbors. Grab a coffee and fresh muffin at the coffee bar, or a cocktail at the end of your day in the sumptuous bar area.
You will not regret this bucket-list trip, you will only wish you had spent more time in the company of these gentle, magnificent creatures. I recommend doing at least 2 excursions, or even 3 if you have the time. Each encounter will be a completely different experience.
If you want to continue onto a safari, it’s an easy hop onto a flight into the Serengeti, Kenya or Uganda.
